A slowly tilting planet

Yesterday, after a couple of extremely fall-like days, I was ready to pronounce a premature end to the summer. But tonight it's back with...if not exactly a vengeance, then with authority. It's just the the warm air and high humidity, it's the men out on their stoops listening to baladas románticas, the girls playing ball on the sidewalk, all of them putting off as long as they can the return to their brick-oven brownstones cooled only with a few overtaxed fans. The middle-class homeowners are scarcer than ever, all of them retreating to the shelter of air conditioning; the streets have been ceded to the blue-collar "ethnics".

I took this all in strolling back through the neighbourhood with monshu. welcomerain and spookyfruit had us over for a simple dinner of steak, salad, and corn, a makeup for an early-summer barbecue we missed due to the Old Man's infirmary. I have admired the astonishing Lego Millennium Falcon and the gorgeous new rugs from Turkey, sampled the "Australian Riesling" from Michigan, and left with a pouch of homemade turkey sous-vide. For the first time in what seems like months although I know it can't be more than a couple weeks, I'll be taking a quick shower and air-drying in front of a fan right before slipping into bed.
