Oh, and lest y'all be left with the impression that Lauro is just another pretty face (and belly, and ass, and--what was my point again? monshu to take to my slow drains and when he saw me carrying it through the lobby, he said, "You didn't buy that, did you? We can give you some caustic soda." I'd never heard of this stuff before, but he told me to get a container and meet him there, then he took me to the maintenance room and scooped some white powder into my bucket from a kitty litter box. "Caustic" is no misnomer--I was standing nowhere near the bin and I was coughing just from the dust it raised. So I made sure to where mask and gloves when pouring it down my drains. Next time, I might consider goggles, too: The stuff spouted like a baking soda volcano when it hit the clog. But it did the trick--no more slow drains, and I didn't break a sweat except on my upper lip.
I'm gonna miss this friendly service. Just before I came across Lauro, I bumped into Marty at the entryway. He asked me the same thing when he saw the plunger--"You didn't buy that, did you? Because that's our job, too!" And he's not even on duty today, he just happens to live in the building. Then this morning, I saw Luis at the front desk and asked him to return the keys I borrowed to let my plasterer in so I wouldn't have to wait for the office to open (the manager warned me that the night guard won't take 'em); he gladly accepted them.monshu and I keep telling ourselves that there will be all kinds of new benefits to our place together, but we'd both still really wish we could take some of the staff we have now with us. With my manager and maintenance men and monshu's cleaner/receiving room attendant, our condo's kung fu would be unstoppable!
