Free parkin
To my surprise, since it struck me as being basically less-interesting gingerbread, the parkin cake was a big hit at the Guy Fawkes party. It was easier than easy to make--just be prepared to slop up your kitchen a bit with blackstrap molasses. Here's a page with 33 recipes, not one of which is one I used, since that came straight out of the Joy of Cooking. (I wanted to try the recipe with the beer in it, but "two-and-a-half pounds of treacle" stopped me dead in my tracks.) Apparently, the cake is "better after a week", so I'm holding onto a piece to try again in a few days.
Last night, e. brought over a flan and, in the absence of
bunj, I felt honour-bound to eat his portion. It's difficult going through life with such a developed sense of fraternal duty, but somehow I manage.
