Gestern abend bin ich samt dem Nuphi und meiner Bruder zum ersten Mal zur Synagoge gegangen, um eine Oper mitzubekommen. Es war die erste (und in aufsehbarer Zeit einzige) Chicagoer Aufführung von Der Kaiser von Atlantis. Der Komponist, Viktor Ullmann, ist in Auschwitz umgekommen, wie auch der Librettist, die Musikanten, und das ganze Ensemble ausser dem Bariton, der den Tod gespielt hat. (Nach ihm, stand er in der Schlange genau hinter dem Tenor, der den Harlekin [den das Leben verkörpert] gespielt hat. Der Mengele selbst überprüfte die Häftlinge und bestimmte das Schicksal von jedem. Er fragte dem Tenor nach seinem Beruf; als er mit "Sänger" antwortete, wurde er aufs Gaskammer gerichtet. Der Bariton, ein straffer junger Mann, log und sagte, "Arbeiter". Er kam aufs Arbeitslager und ist am Leben geblieben.)

Ein kurze Oper ist sie, knapp eine Stunde. Das Ensemble und das Orchester sind auch wegen der begrenzten Auswahl relative klein. Aber was bedrückt man zu allererst und am allermeisten ist wie fest in der österreichisch-deutschen Tradition die Musik steht. Sowas sagte Nuphi vor dem Konzertbeginn mit fast denselben Worten als die Experten in der Nachdiskussion, aber nichts drückte es deutlicher aus als die Komposition von Richard Strauss, die als Präludium gespielt wurde. Sie war das Sextett aus Capriccio, eine Oper die eingermassen als Abschiedsgruß an die Mitteleuropäische Kultur angesehen wird. (Später erzählte der Strauss-Experte, wie der Strauss in 1944 ein Konzert eröffnete mit einer resignierten Bemerkung übers Ende der Kultur.) Die Ähnlichkeiten war unübersehbar. Man hörte in Ullmanns Werk Musikzitate aus/Hüldigungen für deutschsprachige Komponisten von Bach bis Mendelssohn und Brahms bis Weill.

A coworker just came to me with a name authority problem. He showed me the form:

Anndra Ceapadh Dhomhnullaidh

pointed to the second element and asked, "Does this part mean 'mac'?" I told him it didn't, although I couldn't say what it meant or whether it was part of a two-element surname or a second forename. So I did some research.

First of all, it means "thinking".

Second, it's a verbal noun. I don't know of a single example of a Gaelic name consisting of or containing a verbal noun.

Third, the lenited initial of "Dhomhnullaidh" denotes a genitive, so you'd expect there to be something for it to stand in a genitive relationship too. Normally, this would be an element like mac "son", ó "descendent", mael "servant", or gille "boy" (e.g. Mac Giolla Phóil "son of Paul's lad"), but there's no sensible head in sight.

Fourth, Google finds no examples of "Dhomhnullaidh". "Domhnallaich" and "Domhnallaidh", yes, but nothing with "u" or initial lenition.

So I told him, "I've figured it out. The whole thing is Gaelic for 'asshat'."

How the librarians saved civilisation: Part 3,496

Oh, here's another bizarre twist in the odyssey of Viktor Ullmann's works from Theresienstadt to Chicago that was left out in the short work history bunj linked to, but is touched on in this much longer account, which unfortunately omits one of the most intriguing details: The only reason we have the opera at all is because of a librarian.

Ullmann composed twenty works in Theresienstadt. Shortly before he was transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau, he intrusted them to the person among his sympathetic acquaintances with the greatest chance of survival: Hans Adler, the camp librarian. Ullmann reasoned that the Nazis would be unlikely to kill Adler, since he did so much of the bookkeeping for them. Fortunately, he was correct. Adler emigrated to London in 1947, but the manuscript for Der Kaiser von Atlantis sat in an attic for almost thirty years until being dusted off by conductor Kerry Woodward and premiered in Amsterdam in 1975.

(My dry, ironic laugh of relief commingled with a suppressed desire to weep and whirling in my head at the absurdity of existence has seldom gotten as much of a workout as it did during the post-performance discussion. Just wait until you read about the Cultural League of German Jews.)
