¿Como se dice "buzzstomp"?
Last night
monshu called and asked when exactly the family vacation is next summer. I said I wasn't sure. He suggested I nail it down because they might be sending him to Mexico City!
I knew what he was getting at and my immediate reaction was, "Dude, trying to combine a vacation with one of your conferences never works!" And it's true: Toronto, SF, New Orleans--thrice we've raised the possibility and thrice it's been shot down by problems with his schedule, with my schedule, or something completely unexpected. Being true, however, doesn't make it the right thing to say. Immediately, I detected a change. Nothing dramatic (he's not a whiner or a pouter after all, just a sulker), but even though he assured me he wasn't upset and we chatted quite cordially, the tone went from "I've got some good news!" to "Get off the phone already so I can go back to watching West Wing, you killjoy."
I felt bad, but there was no undoing it. Confessing my sin to my SIL made me feel a little better, but I'll need to do some kind of atonement tonight. Guess who'll be paying for dinner! ¡Olé! Maybe we can go back to Riques or would that just be salt in the wound?
