Yesterday, while doing the laundry, I picked up a newspaper someone had left and worked my way through it while waiting for everything to dry. In the centre of the local news page was a photo of Daley Plaza with the illuminated Ubertree and the caption "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year".

Above it was an article about a bright young man who was about to graduate from college and marry his sweetheart. He had been shot in cold blood through the back of the head by a guy who was dating his sister.

To the right were two articles about house fires. One killed a teenager home from school for the holiday. Another completely destroyed the printing shop of a fifth-generation family of printers. Space heaters were blamed.

Below, in the shorts, there were articles about people injured on account of bad weather, about city towing practices, and--way at the end--a mention of the fact that the Zoolights are free this year.

However, all of this happened to Other People. I bought holly and fir and expensive scented, textured candles from Pier 1 and had [livejournal.com profile] monshu build me an advent wreath. Then we fried up potato pancakes, ate Lebkuchen, and felt quite satisfied.

Cats are much better than space heaters. The downside is you have to stay still.

You said: First Sunday of Advent...
Are you celebrating according to the Julian Calendar? The first Sunday of the Nativity Fast was 12/30...Nativity is 1/7...
Love potato pancakes…especially with apple sauce & sour cream....they are satisfying!

Nope, Gregorian Catholic. I don't know from Nativity Fasts and such, but Catholic advent has four sundays, the fourth being the one right before Christmas, so the actual number of days in advent varies. Some so-called "advent calendars" (like the one my grandmother made for us) get around this by putting on the 24 days of December up to Christmas, which roughly matches up to the period of advent.
