Una noche a la opera
Hey, sibs! Everybody pester
bunj into posting what he thought of Siegfried last night. I thought his criticisms were much more cogent than mine. (What was I doing at a five-hour opera if I was so sick I couldn't go into work? We all have our priorities.)
I did get to share a few of them with some random stranger on the el. No sooner had I sat down with the programme in my hand than he said, "So what did you think of Siegfried?" and we were off. From him I learned that opera is big in Mexico and I should definitely check out the Guadelajara opera house if the opportunity presents itself. Vagner en español! Olé!
Update: It worked! Alas, he didn't go into any detail on what his alternative staging of Act 3 would be. In a nutshell, it involves making Siegfried's inheritance of some of the darker aspects of his grandaddy Wotan's character apparent, thus foreshadowing his betrayal of Brunnhilda in the following opera. I wish I had thought of it.
