It takes a village to get Da moved, 1
Friday I spent manically packing and trying to get my place ready for the arrival of the elves on Saturday. Saturday morning, I felt like it was completely unprepared, despite having been up til 2 a.m. Of course, much of that time had been spent chatting with my Mom, since my sister had warned me of her impending plans to get me a largish housewarming gift (my closing is within two weeks of my birthday, so I'm reckoning with a number of combined gifts or house-themed birthday gifts this year) and I decided I'd better head her off at the pass. I described my decorating theme and the furniture I'd already bought in lavish detail. It wasn't until I mentioned the new bed I planned to buy that she saw her opening. "If it's a queen, you'll need all new linens for it, won't you?"
When I related this to e., her suggested response was "Mom, that sounds like a grat gift TO GO SHOPPING FOR WITH YOU." It's odd; I've always thought that I inherited so much of my taste and colour sense from my mother, but e. doesn't agree at all. Of course, it's possible that those earlier influences have been subtly overwhelmed by later ones. As I was going through my closet,
bunj and she kept saying, "Oh, that's a nice shirt!" and I would have to sheepishly confess, "It's another
monshu hand-me-down."
They went TO TOWN on my belongings. By six-thirty--even with a generous break for lunch at Green Tea, shopping at Stamp On In! (don't ask!), and eating gelato from Tutti Dolci in the park--my kitchen was almost entirely packed, as were all but two shelves of books. All of my IKEA furniture 'cept the bed had been disassempled and individually wrapped. There's still plenty to finish up, but it all seems eminently doable now.
We ended up at
monshu's for a lovely dinner on the terrace, courtesy of Reza's. Back in his apartment, I got to complete the game of show-'n'-tell I'd started earlier: All the beautiful art
monshu's given me that I couldn't display or which was lost in the jumble of my old place. For his part,
monshu got to show off his swelling seal collection and a tiny portion of his scrolls.
The next day, we had more shopping to do. We visited the bargain table at CPS and decided to go for it; it should arrive a week from Wednesday. At Room and Board, we revisited my bed and his couch, just to confirm that we sill loved them. Then it was on to Domicile and The Bed Store, to confirm that there was nothing there we wanted. (My Matress Giant adventure deserves an entry of its own.) Finally, Home Depot to look at ugly paint colours. Hopefully, I'll get to Sherwin-Williams tomorrow and load down with paint chips.

You may already know this, but just in case: if you have an item that's the color you're shooting for, my understanding is that these days you can take it to the paint store, have it scanned, and have paint mixed to match it.
