monshu, like Nuphy, is what nurses call a "hard stick". His veins are small; when he's dehydrated (as he always is when he comes in for a procedure after not being allowed to take anything by mouth from the night before), they disappear completely. But when you're in the hospital, blood draws are a daily occurrence. He had one while I was there and, about an hour later, another tech arrived with the news that one of the samples had to be redone. She was jabbing around for the better part of a minute without being able to fill a vial. As she pulled out and tried again, I told him, "If it hurts too much, you can tell her to stop. Remember, she gets two tries and then you get to ask for someone else." She looked at me and said, "You've done this before!" I shook my head and said, "This isn't my first time at this rodeo," which drew a laugh from her. (Turns out it wasn't her fault: she'd found a vein easily but she'd been given defective vials which didn't have to power to draw blood from it.)
