What are the correct local pronunciations of the following St. Louis City streets? I'm so certain no one reading this can get them all that I'm offering a ONE-WAY TICKET TO LAMBERT FIELD to anyone who can. (Of course there is a ringer in the list; the question is, can you spot it or not?)
  1. Cabanne
  2. Carondelet
  3. Chouteau
  4. DeBaliviere
  5. Delmar
  6. Dodier
  7. Gratiot
  8. Gravois
  9. Lemay Ferry
  10. Tucker
Note: If it grates on you to pronounce any of these names with initial stress, you should disqualify yourself now. Remember, they may have been named for Frogs, but they were said by Micks, Krauts, and rednecks.

1.Cavern
2.Candle
3.[the ringer]
4.Debeller
5.Delmer
6.Dodier (not the dodiest, but not merely dody)
7.Grattit
8.Gravy
9.Lemmy Ferry
10.Just like it's spelled

Note: I have no idea where St Louis City is, aside from somewhere in the US.
You all speak funny over there.
And your gravy is white, which is very, very unhealthy.

Unhealthy, yes, but a milk gravy with sausage over homemade biscuits is a fine, fine thing (even though I can only eat about 5 bites).

Ladies and Gentlemens! Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] teapot_farm, we present to you how these names WOULD be pronounced if St. Louis were in the Midlands rather than the Midwest!

As for the ringer, you should know that "just as it's spelled" are words of DOOM!

Frog bashing

For all my driving around St. Louis I haven't seen some of these. I have to wonder about Carondelet - even the health care system pronounces it Carondele.

I will never, ever, ever pronounce Chouteau as ChoTo. I just can't.

But you forgot Spoede - that one is my favorite. Spode Road it is...

I'm sure "Carondelay" is how they say it in the original Belgian as well, but that doesn't change the fact that the "t" is not silent on the South Side.

I didn't forget Spoede. I so wanted to include it, but it's a County road, not a City street.

Okay, I'm giving this a try, because down the road from me is a town spelled Manor that's pronounced MAYnor.

1.CABin
2.CARE-on-del-it
3. shuh-TOE
4. deh-BAL-i-veer
5. DEL-mar
6. DOD-ur
7. GRA-shet
8. GRA-voy (or gravy?)
9. Lemmy Ferry
10. Ringer

You nailed #5, #8, and may have gotten #7. (That's not the usual local pronunciation, but it may still be acceptable.) A couple others are close, but--most vitally--you spotted the ringer!

Wow, something must've gotten into my skin during those INTERMINABLE MONTHS creeping up in the elevator of the arch with two giant fat people who had questionable habits of hygiene.

2. Ka ron' do let
3. Sho' to(long o)
4. De bal' i ver
5. Del' mar
6. Do di' aye
7. Gra ti' o
8. Gra' voy
9. Le' may Fer' ee
10. Tuck' er

Well, Mr Shoo-in, see [livejournal.com profile] caitalainn's post for the identity of the ringer. As for #6, you've forgotten a beloved family story! It's only our late aunt who thought to pronounce the street that way, remember? And #1--weren't you ever at Cabanne House for some social function? #7 is a killer, I grant you. I've never heard it mentioned, I've only be told how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Ringer: I didn't just say "ringer" but my pronounciation is correct.

#6: Hey, she was a St. Louisan. Considering how seldom is shows up in conversation, maybe she was the standard and everyone else you talked to were the abberation.

#1: No.

#7: I question the judge's verdict, considering his lack of familiarity with the street. Once being told how something is pronounced is hardly rock solid knowledge.

Looking forward to the County edition, with Spoede and Des Peres.

#6 She was a Chicagoan.
#7 I once got lost on that street. It's a short street, so I likely have more direct experience with it than anyone else involved in this poll. However, would the contestant accept this as an authoritative source, in which case [livejournal.com profile] caitalainn's pronunciation is judged to be correct in all particulars?

I am very disappointed that none of my immediate kin has been the guest of the Ambassadors of St. Louis. We should seek to have that oversight remedied upon our next return to St. Louis society.
