One week before you close on your new condo is the BEST TIME in the world for next payday's timesheet to go missing. It's also the BEST TIME in the world for the person in the Personnel office to take the day off.

After talking to Payroll, what surprises me is not that they can't find it; it's that I haven't gone through this SOONER. Fortunately, I'm not alone; five other people from my workplace are in the same boat. (None of my staff, thank goodness!) The pressure is on Personnel or Human Resources or both to find a solution that does not shaft us all come Friday.

But I'm not panicking. Why not? Because a world-class financial services firm finally got their heads OUT OF THEIR ASSES and gave me wire transfer privileges for my money market account. I'm glad I sent the documents overnight mail so that they could dick around for SIX DAYS before processing them. (Six days, of course, during which no one in their organisation could tell me if they had actually received the documents or not, because when you're a big hot-shot money managing firm, you don't worry about little details like that, apparently.) Besides, it's not like my employers aren't EVER going to pay me. I'm sure they'll cut me a check, eventually, when they FEEL LIKE IT.

So I'm covered. And I'm not panicking. I'm just not happy.

Lovely. Sounds like your former employer. If the ONE human resources department in the division is out, there is no one who can forward invoices to payroll, because she has no assistant and won't let anyone take over any of her duties. So if she goes on vacation, I don't get paid.

It's GREAT.

They're just doing this to you so you'll stop complaining about the automated system.

Believe me, the thought had crossed my mind. Except that, even once that system is fully in place (they've been unrolling it out gradually for maximum confusion--they even distributed paper timesheets for the current pay period, during which we're all supposed to be using the electronic system), we'll still be printing out copies and signing them. I'd say it's like the dumbest thing ever, but then HR would feel honour-bound to come up with something dumberer.
