On the wane

I tend to forget that the more extreme the variation in the length of daylight, the more quickly it reverses. It's not even ten days since the solstice and already the western sky is still light again when I leave work. Well, at least on days when it's not overcast. I don't know how many of those we have to look forward to in the days above. It's still not beastly cold here yet--and the lack of snow is simply uncanny--but today was the first one I can remember when my face was smarting from the freezing air.
We've decided to cancel Hogmanay. With the way the Old Man is feeling these days, I fear even a low-key event would be too much. He does well enough for an hour or two, but I wouldn't want to subject him to an entire afternoon of comings and goings. Moreover,
ladytiamat's visit will provide an excuse for a get-together which will attract several of the people I was hoping to see at our house anyway. As for the rest, well, I'll just have to make more of an effort.
