Now that the announcement is public, I feel comfortable revealing that the friend who died over the weekend is beloved Chicago writer Lee Sandlin. The local classical radio station is rebroadcasting an interview with him as I type this, but I know I can't bear to hear his voice again just yet. Lee's one of those people who's like a fantasy version of what my life maybe could've been like were I much more talented and motivated and had made different decisions. I know a lot of people who love to talk as much as I do. Unlike me, many of them are very good at it. But few among them are anywhere near as consistently interesting to listen to as Lee was.
ETA: If anything, I underestimated just how good a raconteur Lee is. The past forty minutes, I've been so caught up in what he's actually saying that I hardly have time to grieve about the fact he's not actually saying it any more.
