Shopping and dropping
Today's venues:
- That's Our Bag, to replace the tattered, crappy, freebie shoulder bag I've had for two years too long with something decent. After an absolutely unseemly amount of increasing frustration, I dodged the decision by buying a cheapie bag that will last at least a few years while I promise to look for something handsome and leather at a price I'm willing to pay. Fortunately, this trial so exhausted my decision anxiety that it left me relatively powerless for the rest of the day.
- Marshall Fields, to realise that the sofa set we both loved and were willing to buy is three inches too tall to fit through
monshu's door and pick out shirts that weren't on the racks. Kudos to Lowell, a helpful, knowledgeable, low-pressure salesman. His breed is dying out! - Carson Pirie Scott, to weigh other sofas and find them all wanting. Oh, and to discover a bargain floor model dinette set that wasn't actually sold (although so labeled), but that the sales clerk couldn't find a price for anyway.
- Fox and Obel, because we really, really wanted to wander around Streeterville like dorks in the heat of the day. (Note to selves: Not only are the lake streets not in geographical, alphabetical, or another other retentional order--they're not even all together!) Oh, and to discover a place with fantastic sandwiches, excellent baked goods and pastries, mouth-watering aged beef and cheeses, and exotic fresh produce that's inconveniently located in a great neighbourhood we could never afford in a million years.
- Material Culture, because I'm not above letting myself be fondled if it means friend prices on absolutely gorgeous antique Asian furniture. It would be far, far too easy to blow a huge chunk of my savings on the pieces just in their basement. What was I saving it all for anyway? Foreign travel? Grad school? Old age?
- Chez Monshu, to realise that the most important things in life don't come with price tags, even though they're only available on layaway plans.

Fox and Obel is great. I really should go there more often, since it's not that far from my office.
