muckefuckThis crazy cold weather is throwing off my reading cycle. I'm just short of the halfway point in The known world. But as I sat on the shuttle this morning wearing a long-sleeved shirt and staring out at the damp grey weather, I kept thinking I want to be reading high fantasy. Or maybe something Japanese. Maybe it's time to take a break and dive into Neveryona for a bit. I read the first chapter on the bus Saturday and it's whetted my appetite.
Last night I finished off The Englishman's boy. It was a satisfying read overall, but not up to the standard of The last crossing. The Western scenes work very well, but it's hard to set something in Hollywood without it becoming too wish-fulfilly. There's a bit too much historical gossip shoehorned in prefaced by expository prose which sounds like the equivalent of, "Of course you remember that O.J. Simpson is the former running back who led the cops on a televised car chase when he was accused of murdering his wife." I didn't set out to be a Vanderhaeghe completist, but his latest, A good man, sounds appealing, with its mix of Mounties and Fenians.
