Close to home
The shape of the day was determined by my sleeping in until 10 or so. Mr Bigbones called and reached
monshu, who agreed to be at home at 5 when they would stop by to pick up the purslane I potted up at Miss Cleveland's request earlier in the week. If I'd felt more of an impetus, I still could've made it to the beach to crash the GLB party or checked out the street fair on Clark. But events like that are most fun when they're open-ended, not when you know you have to scurry back to reach your door before someone travelling to see you does.
We had hoped they might go to dinner with us, but they couldn't stay long. Long enough, though, to let us know the move to France wasn't happening (the headhunter has found a stronger candidate; so much for Miss C's accordion lessons) and to let us know about Mr BB's crazy cousin in Siberia's romantic movie (apparently state funding isn't enough so he's soliciting donations). As I told the GWO, if it wasn't a truly satisfying visit in itself, it may at least serve as a prelude to one.
So, with no other plans, we decided to try out the bistro-y place on Broadway that used to be a college pub. Seems like it's still searching for an identity: they courted the community, only to find themselves a student hangout again, and now with summer upon us it's half-deserted. We'd hoped the food would be a draw. It isn't. If already you're there drinking, you might as well order it rather than tromp off in search of something else (unless you're really craving Ethiopian or sushi). But why would you be drinking there in the first place?
