It was a fun night at the bar Saturday evening, but for some reason I find myself circling back to the gaffes and missteps--calling someone the wrong name, inadvertently ditching someone I was hitting it off with, and just generally being a boor. It the same thing I mock my older brother for, only in an incomparably milder form. There was a bit of an old-folks-at-home-week vibe, as someone who was active in the Bears during my day was back in town and getting updates on a number of people while I listened and interjected.
Cocktail Night was another bust, but luckily I was able to pull the plug early. I figured it was bad timing: lots of people were out of town for the 4th and those who weren't partied hard and were done in. One by one, my most reliable attendees begged off until about quarter after ten, I told
monshu the coast we clear and headed over. As last time, I had to take a pass on another social opportunity to be there, so if it's dead pants again next month I might have to consider giving it a rest for a while.
Today was a nothing day. We sat on the patio and read. (I finished up the Faulkner the night before waiting on my no-shows.) Hot and humid at last, but the breeze made it tolerable. For a while I usurped the Old Man's seat and got a taste of why he loves it so much. Scooter caught me gazing into space as I let the patterns of leaves and petals with the light shining through them dance across my vision without focussing on anything in particular. In the evening, it was laundry and the penultimate episodes of Veronica Mars.
