Notes: This entry is really nothing more than an excuse for a place to contain the lovely word Rauchfangkehrer, which I stumbled across by accident today. (I suspect it might be a Vindobonism, though I don't have confirmation of that.) After all, there's no possible practical use for these words given that our gas fireplace doesn't even have a false flue.

According to Dad, Grandaddy has no use for chimney sweeps either. When the creosote buildup got to be too much, he just tossed a match up the chimney and started a flue fire. I remember thinking that you'd want to have a lot of faith in the structural integrity of the brickwork to do something like that.

I don't know what "Vindobonism" means so I googled it, and it gets exactly one hit - your post. YAY! (Now probably two, since I just quoted it.)

So I don't know if Rauchfangkehrer is what you suspect it to be, it's a word I'd recognize, in any case. Schornsteinfeger is the one that's most used, I think it's the one that's not regional. I don't know how it is in other countries, here the Schornsteine are checked regularly (yearly?) by the appointed Bezirksschornsteinfegermeister - who only last (or this?) year lost their monopoly on these jobs, btw. They check emissions, no matter if that's from real fires or other heating systems. Ours is coming next week, incidentally.

And it's not even one of the made-up ones, though apparently they've been renamed:
Ab 2013
heißt der Bezirksschornsteinfegermeister dann "bevollmächtigter Bezirksschornsteinfeger".

My hometown has this every Mayday weekend. If you grow up with it, it's perfectly normal, but for visitors it's truly bizarre. Why are there loads of children dressed as chimney sweeps? Where did you get all those morris dancers? Why are they weird kind of goth morris dancers? Why is there a man dressed as a tree? Is this just an excuse to get drunk all weekend? (Yes).

(dunno why the address is lancashire when it's in Kent)

But does one really need an excuse to use Rauchfangkehrer? I mean, it kind of brings its own excuse, doesn't it? Like Schutzgitterrahmenriemenschalterhalter.
