Right now, I'm wishing I could have an hour back. Not the hour I'm going to lose tonight to DST--I've got nothing going tomorrow, I can deal. The hour I spent at Big Chicks after 10:20 p.m. when I thought If I want to be in bed before midnight, I really need to go now.. It's wasn't that I didn't enjoy myself after that point, but a two-hour nap hasn't cured my droopiness (and was never going to) and in a little while I'm leaving to catch our last opera of the seasons, La clemenza di Tito.
Against all odds, Twilight Santa really was surprised. I accidentally photobombed the snaps of the moment, though. Moments after leaving the house, I needed to pee again. No prob, I thought, I'll have plenty of time when I get to the bar: The invitation said to be there by 8:30 for his arrival at 9. At about 8:20, I saunter in, see no one, and head into the adjoining room. There's a moment of tension and release before BT hisses, "Get over here!" Everyone is huddled behind a big banner at the far side of the room. "He's here! Did he see you?" "I don't think so," I say, joining the group and shedding my coat.
After several moments waiting, I go up to BT and say, "How long are we going to be here?" "Until 9 o'clock if we need to." So I popped into the bathroom across the room and quickly did my biz. When I stepped out, TS was right there and the lights suddenly went on. Even though I couldn't see his face, it was pretty clear we'd gotten him good. BT reported that he looked crestfallen earlier in the evening, which agonised his boyfriend. "No, that's what you want!" BT told him by way of reassurance, "You're building him down in order to build him back up again!"
I could've happily spent the whole night chatting with BT, his ex, Scruffy, and their friend the bartender, but I felt a need to branch out and mingle. My success was limited: At least one guy (and perhaps two) made a hasty exit when we ran low on chat. A half dozen gazed right through me, in the time-honoured A-gay manner (including, oddly, someone I'd had some really nice chats with a couple years ago). But I did get to catch up with an old Great Lakes Bears buddy who's been uncommonly friendly the last few encountres. I meant to ask him about some old acquaintances we had in common, but my memory blanked and only came back later on the el as I passed their old house.
