Latest NetFlix follies: According to the app, both Up and Morir (o no) were due to arrive last Friday. Up, as you know, came in two pieces (though, to their credit, they had a replacement to us by Monday) and the other film didn't arrive at all. So imagine my surprise when [livejournal.com profile] monshu told me this morning he got the message that it had been returned. How could we return something we never had? He called and was told the disc probably slipped out of the envelope in the post and got sent back, and they'd send out another copy right away. And then today in the mail we got...a second copy of Up? How does that make any sense at all? When I bitched to Nuphy last week, he blamed our problems on our local post office, but I don't see how they can responsible for a screw up like that.

Clearly the universe was giving us a sign, so we surrendered ourselves to the Spirit of Adventure. What a ride! Hardly a button of mine was left untouched. It's incredible to me how much more finally rendered many of the details are compared to Ratatouille a mere two years earlier; I can't even imagine what they're turning out now. But as usual, it's the human (and canine and avian) details that are really impressive. Kids in particular are really easy to get wrong. Adults get blinded by stereotypes while trying to look back to their own childhoods and end up producing something that looks fuck-all like actual juvenile behaviour. But when I looked at Russell I saw my own nephews, and when I look at young Ellie and Carl, I saw myself.

What with the jabs at scouting and the theme of adolescent adventure, what it most reminded me of was Moonrise Kingdom, which also overpowered my defences in a similar way. In bed afterwards, I asked the Old Man, "What's your Paradise Falls?" As usual when I surprise him with such questions, he surprises me with his answers. "Oh, I don't know. Just having the time to do the small stuff." Maybe next year we'll take one of those trips we've been talking about, but this year the adventure is just living with only one commute.
