Milestones
A couple of quick calls tonight to deliver birthday greetings, first to
bunj then to Mom. (Yes, Mom always says that he's the best birthday present she's ever gotten. Can we hear a chorus of "Awww"s?) Since in the end I never did go through with the death-themed party I've been plotting in my head for years, it was my chance to rib him a bit about his entry into middle age. We both agreed, however, that middle age just isn't what it once was, so the traditional jokes don't have the same sting. Perhaps it'll be a different story in ten years.
Mom kind of burbled on about her book club for a while (when she mentioned there was an English professor in the group, I actually asked her "What's her apparatus?" before it occurred to me I was talking to a real person and not an academic) but she ended up by getting confessional. It's weird; she's been treating me like an adult for at least twenty-five years, and yet there's still a part of me that goes "OHGODOHGODOHGOD" whenever she begins to talk about certain aspects of her personal life. Deep down, I still expect her to be a Madonna of sorts. Catholic school, you have so much to answer for!
