Rosenstrasse was undeniably effective but ultimately somewhat disappointing. I bought into the frame story, but disliked how it focused the attention on a single extremely privileged participant in the protests--presumably because two hours of gray poverty is simply too much to ask from the average theatregoer. It's Berlin in the 40s! Give us a Marlene Dietrich song sung by someone in a slinky dress!

I was also hoping for more nuts and bolts of the protests. Clearly there was some degree of organisation among the protestors, but how much? Unsurprisingly, the portrayal has been sharply criticised by historians of the period for its inaccuracies. The filmmaking distorted or left unclear basic details such as how many people were involved, for how long, and who was released and when. Fine, it's not a documentary, but in that case it could've ended on a less pat and happy note.

Still, a satisfying experience overall and one that prompted me to do a little research into the background of the protests, in the course of which I ran across fascinating tidbits like the carrier of the notorious "Greiferin" Stella Goldschlag, who continued to ferret out hidden Jews for the Nazis well after they had shipped away her husband and parents to the death camps. More and more, I realise that I have no idea whatever what I would've done had I been pitched into a merciless milieu like that.
