Winter is coming

We've been debating for a while now whether to bring the plants in off the back porch, and with lows near freezing tonight and predicted below it for the next several days, we decided it was time. I had to trim the scented geranium to make it a reasonable size (something I'd been putting off until I had a use for the leaves, which apparently I never will) and repot several other plants. We thought the wirevine and Swedish ivy from the planters might tolerate a winter indoors well enough and the Old Man thought we might as well have a stab at saving the geraniums from the planters out front. They'll get leggy, but maybe if we prune them hard in the spring, they'll do even better.
We also decided to turn on the furnace. At first I thought the space heater in the bedroom would be enough, but creeping out of bed this morning disabused me of that notion in a hurry. The GWO was in the office all bundled up, so I asked him, "Are you cold? Then why didn't you turn the heat on?" "I wanted to consult with you first." I guess that's what officially recognised spouses do. Or maybe all my carrying on about not turning on the air conditioning before it's absolutely unavoidably necessary had made him chary of touching the thermostat for any reason.
For dinner, we thawed out a mystery container from the freezer.
monshu was hoping for cassoulet, but it turned out to be last year's bigos, which seemed fine except for the deleterious effect long freezing had had on the texture of the sauerkraut. It also seemed to reach a near homeostasis of sodium concentration, which made the cabbage taste a bit salty. Had I had more confidence that it would turn out edible at all, I would've bought more ingredients and made it one ingredient in a larger batch. Maybe later in the week.

"For dinner, we thawed out a mystery container from the freezer." Haha, I like that, I do it, too. I love the element of surprise which I rarely get, doing all the shopping and cooking myself. (And my freezer is small enough to contain only trustworthy leftovers...)
