仄暗い水の底から (Dark Water) was a film I threw into the queue back in August when I was looking for some J-horror to mark the Ghost Festival with. But then the timing got screwed up, I missed my window, and it fell back into the pile. But I didn't get around to rearranging things last week after returning Deathly Hallows, so it showed and got shelved because I didn't want to lose sleep on a weeknight from watching a scary film.
Turns out I needn't've worried. There's little in way of actual scares, just a lot of atmospheric dread. If you've watched Ringgu or The Ring before, you know what to expect. It shares a lot of same imagery and even the same basic plot, but without any clever twist. Instead it substitutes sentimentality. (The song played over the closing credits is truly awful.) In a word: lame.
