A touch of autumn

First thing I did when I got home tonight (well, after picking catnip for Boobers and giving
monshu a kiss) was throw open all the windows and let the cold front blow in. I woke up in the wee hours of the morning stifling in humidity and wondering if the time had finally come to switch on the cooling--not to cool air but just to get the moisture out of it. No need for that now.
Even though my foot has been acting up, I was determined to make it to the lakefront while the "beach hazard warning" was still in effect. We're a bit too far west to get the 7'-10' heights predicted, but it was still glorious. Even from a block away, I could already scent the spray. As a bonus, the hazy clouds just above the horizon were lit up like Fiestaware, lingering longest in the north of the sky.
I was determined to see the moonrise, but the wind was actually chilling me, so I stepped into the campus library to warm up. Getting a pass turned out to be no quick affair, so by the time I made it to the window I could see the moon already fully above the horizon. Without a second thought, I immediately left and ran back to the shore. It was an exquisite shade of orange and I regretted not being there to see it first emerge.
Even though it was doing a stunning job of retaining its colour, I decided to leave before I started to shiver. The idea of collecting columbine seeds was still in my head when I left--I even tucked a baggie in my pocket to collect them--but when I finally stumbled upon a clump of them I found the seedheads empty. Who knows what mysterious powers they might've had had I succeeded?
