Today I took the afternoon off. I wish I could say it was to enjoy the almost-spring weather (it was sunny and mild, the temperature above freezing for a change and robins singing in the lawns) but it was for a meeting with [livejournal.com profile] monshu's financial adviser. It's shocking just how much financial advice costs when it's not subsidised by a services company--I don't know if I could justify paying that much for a couple hours with someone who isn't removing a part of my insides. But it was the Old Man's money, not mine, and if everything plays out like your man predicts, it will seem like small change.

Some of his advice sounded counterintuitive at first, but he found a way of framing it that allowed us to see the sense in it. Mostly, he sold us confidence. He confirmed that the retirement plan the Old Man showed him (typed out with spreadsheets--he's always so überprepared for these things) would work, but suggested some modifications which would give us much more cash on hand for the unexpected. He was never going to be eating dog food, but it's nice to see that he won't have to be cutting back severely on the things that give him real pleasure, like collecting art.

One of the questions we spent the most time on is one that most likely wouldn't've even come up a year ago: How different does this all look with marriage? [livejournal.com profile] monshu admitted that it was something "I never thought I'd see in my lifetime" and had to be talked around to the very real possibility of DOMA being overturned before he leaves work. Even though we've discussed the possibility dispassionately many times by now, I still got a bit varklempt at the prospect. However much I try to play the antisentimalist, there's a weight to the words, "Let's get married" that at times borders on the overwhelming.

His office was small, but the view is tremendous; despite a huge concrete eyesore a block to the southeast, you can still clearly see both the Hancock and the Sears/Willis Tower and--closer to hand, obviously--St Stan's. You can tell [livejournal.com profile] monshu has hardly been to West Town: a couple times he asked me, "Is this Bucktown?" I was charmed to see that Podhalanka is still a going concern. We had talked about dining out nearby, but in the end we were both well tired and just wanted to be back home.
