So how long has it been since you last saw one of these?

I can't remember how it was the GWO and I got around to talking about them the other day. Maybe it was by association from bringing up the Gran Marnier-sweetened Baltec which Scruffy made for himself at our place once? But they were in my head when I was out looking for stocking stuffers. I thought there was a chance of finding them at Whole Paycheck, but when I asked the affable guy at the service desk, he said, "I haven't seen one of those in years."

"I think I've seen them at CostPlus", I said, "but I don't feeling like going all the way to one."

Then he told me there was a World Market only a few blocks away--which I think I kind of knew, in the same way that I knew Burl Ives died of oral cancer, i.e. it stirs a recollection when pointed out to me. Not only did they have them, they also had a dark chocolate version, which I don't recall having seen before.

Back at work, an English coworker of mine happened to be shuffling by as I was getting settled. I called him over with the words, "Look what I bought!" His face melted into a smile of fond remembrance. "I haven't seen one of these in a long time." (Come to think of it, [livejournal.com profile] oh_meow, he is old enough to be your nana.) After he left, I looked at the two in my bag and decided that that was one more than one household needed, and that some lucky limey expat was going to get a visit from St Nick in the morning.

The shopping left me fired up, and I browbeat the Old Man into helping me decorate the mantel, telling him the Good Saint wouldn't visit an unadorned home. After holding off for so long, I was finally ready to listen to some Christmas music, so I loaded up the tray of the CD player with traditional carols--and stewed in frustration as it promptly broke, resisting all our half-hearted attempts to fix it.

No matter; it only dented my mood, it didn't spoil it. Still we put off the rest of the decorating for the weekend, which we'd keep wide open in hopes of entertaining a friend who ultimately blew us off. (And he isn't even gay!) Tomorrow is the delivery of the new washer and medical appointments and a return visit to the Christkindlmarket. If only I can get myself to sleep after ingesting all that chocolate!

Come over to the UK - we have milk chocolate ones, plain chocolate ones, white chocolate ones, ones with crunchy orange bits in, ones with pop candy orange bits in...

The popping candy and butterscotch ones are amazing. They sell them everywhere too in the winter. They also do a bar and boxed chocolates versions, shaped like orange slices.

I thought of a list of things from the UK you would like that people really eat, and would be in an export shop and not too perishable:
Green & Black's chocolate
Walker's sensations crisps (I particularly like the lime and coriander poppadum ones)
Chocolate hobnobs
Caramel digestives
Fentiman's cola
Tunnock's caramel wafers
Twiglets
Crabbie's ginger beer

Or look at http://ocado.co.uk/ for things. You don't have online grocery shopping in the US do you? It's the most convenient thing ever.

We can get some of those things here in Toronto -- Green & Black's is pretty easy, and Crabbie's ginger beer has started to show up at the LCBO (state-run liquor stores). I'd kill for Walker's sensations -- they used to do a roast lamb & mint crisp I adored...

I was really disappointed with the alcoholic version of Crabbies, it was all sickly and had no ginger kick. The non-alcoholic version, served with whiskey is much nicer. Fever tree make nice ginger beer and tonic water too.

I have fond fond memories of the ones Droste used to make, in milk chocolate, and we only got them for the holidays, from Delicatessen Meyer. The Terry's are a nice substitute of course, and you can get them at Target. Gwyn

They are plentiful, if not especially cheap, here -- let me know if you need a care package!

Peter, btw, always opens them by whacking them on his head.
