  • Collectively, we've spent over a dozen hours dealing with Crazy Brother over the last couple days and the upshot seems to be that he accepts he'll have to go back on his anti-psychotic, but for some unfathomable reason he wants to stay off of it for a full week. He keeps assuring us he won't do himself any permanent harm and he has a track record of always shying away from doing anything potentially disabling (he fears a lifetime of being maimed more than dying) but he's never pushed himself this hard before so it's hard to feel completely sanguine. I used to be angry when this happened (this'll be, what, his fifth or sixth hospitalisation?); now I'm just resigned. Because it looks like noncompliance is the new normal.
  • In theory, the board of my condo is retaining a lawyer in order to enforce the bylaws with regard to rentals. In fact, very little seems to be happening. The president is finally stepping up and taking things in hand, but the nominal treasurer is a complete flake who doesn't even understand how to edit a spreadsheet. We've just asked her for a copy of the condo insurance policy because one of the owners has hit upon the brilliant idea of hosting a paid-admission event in the common areas--and when I say "hit upon", what I mean is "has already scheduled it without seeking board approval or even reading the bylaws, which specifically prohibit using units for commercial activities". She hasn't gotten it to us, of course, but why worry? The event's only scheduled to take place a week from now.
  • On top of all this, I've not been sleeping well all week. It's not even the stress, I don't think, unless my GERD is more stress-fueled than I thought. I had a bad bout of it Sunday night despite not having eaten anything triggery with reprises Monday night and early this morning. My mom suggested I might want to get checked for H pylori infection, the defeat of which solved all of her reflux issues years ago. (All this time I thought her problems were structural and ascribed her passing over them in silence to maternal modesty.)
So that's me. What're y'all dealing with?

UPDATES
  1. Crazy Brother has agreed to be be hospitalised. I don't know more than that at the moment.
  2. Prez got in touch with our insurance agent, who brought up another serious concern: There will be cocktails. If a minor gets served, we are up shit creek in a poo canoe.
  3. I actually slept decently last night. Not great, but after four bad nights it feels amazing. Of course, I may just have chucked it all away by eating Indian today.

My townhouse association has been trying to hire a lawyer to revise our bylaws for years now. An attorney will show up for a meeting (sometimes), claim he will do the work, and then become unreachable by telephone or email. I suspect the job is just too small potatoes to take precedence over anything else at all that comes over the transom of your average attorney.

So, good luck with the lawyer part. Maybe you could just send something on condo letterhead forbidding the event, and hope that's good enough? Sometimes people believe lawyers will get them even if there are no lawyers.

To be clear, we need the lawyer for the rental issue. Some of the owners can't sell because we're over the cutoff for bank financing. We have a cap, but we've never attempted to enforce it before now. The catering event is just an added fun thing that I only became aware of last week.

Hmm - I did some research around those cutoffs a few months ago since our bylaws have the same cap. All of the documentation I found said those cutoffs only applied when properties were being used as investments, i.e. if they are being bought to be rented. Have the other owners actually encountered buyers being refused mortgages because of this?

That's what they tell us. The other gay couple in the building have been trying very actively to sell their place so they can move elsewhere and they say most banks won't touch our building because of the high rental percentage. [livejournal.com profile] monshu and I have been concerned about violations to the rental cap, but they're the ones who brought this up in meetings and vigorously pursued it.

If you had a high percentage of units delinquent or in foreclosure (like some buildings I can think of), there would be plenty of work for a lawyer. So the inability to find one is probably a blessing in disguise.

Re: Your GERD. Are you using an angle wedge pillow? its about 25 degrees in height and it puts less pressure on your throat when you sleep.

This helped my father, I am going to get one at some point.

I use at least two softer pillows. I'm not sure what angle that gives me. Much more than that, and it aggravates my back issues.

Sorry to hear it, the more extreme solution, which isn't practical for you is to actually angle the entire bed by an inch or so same effect without the additional pressure on your back.

I am currently rethinking my drip coffee consumption. I think its one cup in the morning, nothing past noon, and no iced coffee with any regularity.

Up until last night at around 4:30 in the morning, I was dealing with GURPS mechanics. Just as irritating as condo regulations, but far less important.

I'm updating Madness Dossier to Fourth Edition, complete with New Guinean isolate language "Danbe." Linguo Boy FTW!
