Day on Earth

- There's not a breath of wind outside right now, so I was comfortable taking a stroll of the neighbourhood in only a t-shirt and sweater. On the last leg, I cut through the alley half a block west and came across two men and two children playing with a soccer ball. One of the children was talking excitedly about the rat he saw "big as a cat, with the face of a pig". I asked him in passing if he knew what an opossum was. Unfortunately I could only remember half of the one Spanish word I know for it (zarigüeya) which isn't even the most common name in Mexico.
- Earlier I passed Royal Coffee and it recalled the conversation I'd had with a French music composition student on the shuttle last night. He said it's his favourite place to hang out in the neighbourhood "because they speak French and they have the best crêpes I've had...anywhere". When someone from Paris tells you that, you bleeding listen.
monshu and I are going to check it out Thursday night.
- For lunch, I tried out the new place across the street from the empty shell of Pomegranate. It's called Soulwich and the concept can be summed up as "pan-Asian bánh mì". If anything, the rolls are even softer than what you get on Argyle, but they're topped high with the same pickled carrot and cilantro. Might've been a better place for their slaw, which was bland on its own. The meat was a phenomenal surprise: chunks of pork shoulder smoked to their specifications. A little messy--I basically held the sandwich a foot away from my body to let the sauce splash on the ground--but definitely worth going back for.
- Kitty made a rare appearance on the banister tonight and we played catch again just like old times. Ever since the vet said he needed to lose a couple pounds, I've been making a point of playing with him more. He shows only desultory interest in his toys unless I rub them with catnip. He even showed interest in
monshu once I did the same with him!
- I need to not make the mistake I made last night and get caught up in the ball game. I did that last night and I was too wound up to sleep for another hour, which led to a sluggish day at work. But the Cards are making it really difficult by getting themselves into the same position as last night (2-1 at the top of the 9th), only this time they've managed to force extra innings. Either way, their spot in the penthouse is secure (Milwaukee is a full three games behind), just as the Cubs are still cozy in the garden apartment.
