All I ever wanted

Today I took a vacation. I deliberately didn't check any work or condo mail. The only unpleasantly "practical" thing I did was call TIAA-CREF to complain about their shitty new site which makes it impossible to find any substantial information about the contribution I made in order to get refund from the Feds.
I spent the middle of the day hanging out with
kumazuki. He wanted Swedish meatballs, so we headed down to Svea in Andersonville. (Verdict: Don't go there for meatballs. Good salt pork and fried potatoes, however.) After that, we strolled around a bit. It wasn't a balmy day, but it was more than comfortable in the sunshine. As he was taking off for Madison, I told myself I should go out again, maybe stroll down to the lakefront.
But then it clouded over and began to look like rain, so I decided to stay in. Perhaps read some more Flaubert (I've still got about a quarter of Bovary to go) or sit down with the manuscript
zompist sent me for review. Instead, I decided to putter. I stripped the bed and started a load of laundry. I did a little shopping and ate some kind of huge Mexican scone for afternoon tea.
When
monshu finally shambled through the door two hours later than usual after an extended work day, I had three pots on the stove: turkey stock, a sofregit, and shredded turkey meat in gravy. A put on a fourth and began sautéing spinach and portobellos for the "orzotto" I planned to make with the "maize orzo" I'd picked up at Middle Eastern Bakery earlier in the day. (Sadly there was no discernible corn flavour, but it did have a lovely golden colour.)
In short, it was a lovely day and a fair answer to the question, "What would I do with myself if I didn't have to work?"
