Poor
monshu! Saturday morning, he announced the onset of a cold. He spent pretty much the entire day in bed. Sunday he only really got up and got moving because he needed to clean up from the party I'd thrown the night before so he could prepare the dinner I'd talked him into hosting. I helped out here and there (notably by handling the baking and dusting of the walnut cookies), but I had my own reasons for feeling shagged out, having spent the day before showing friends of the family around Hyde Park and then hitting Bear Night with my big hairy posse.
The cookies were the breakout hit of dinner, by the way. I made over three dozen, we had three guests, and this morning there were three left. (And there would be none at all if I hadn't finally set them decisively out of reach of the Scoutmaster; I think he was responsible for polishing off a whole dozen on his own.) It was an Italian shortbread recipe featuring ground nuts;
monshu incorporated some of the black walnuts from Christmas and the results were transcendent. I guarantee there will be more batches in our future. (Invite us over for your next do and you might even see one!)
Before that, however, there was a leg of lamb stuffed with fennel and mushrooms and a risotto with artichoke heart and asparagus. (The GWO complained that the risotto had lost some "bite" from standing too long, but we're even because I had to rush the heating of my soup, so it was served too lukewarm.) But we started off with the Frühlingssuppe garnished with mimosa, Asiago, and fresh chive, and before that it was prosecco cocktails on the back porch. (Sadly, my attempt to incorporate woodruff syrup was not wholly successful, but Nuphy's addition of crème de gingembre came off very well.) Maybe just a bit nippy for that, but you won't hear me complaining; it was absolutely picture perfect otherwise.
