Somehow I seem to have fallen into the role of Apostle of Woodruff, at least for this part of North America. It's not my favourite flavour by any means, but I do like and most Americans--even crunchy granolas and hip urban foodies--have apparently never heard of it. Perhaps that's not surprising given that woodruff-derived products were banned here for many years due to the presence of a compound called coumarin. Even today, the FDA permits it "in alcoholic beverages only" (thus the availability of may wine and żubrówka), so I guess that means that the Bavarian woodruff candies I picked up at the Sweets Castle before Christmas were sold to me illegally.
Three times already since the start of the year I've whipped out a bag of these at a gathering and passed it around, twice only last weekend. I can no longer remember how the subject came up at the Groundhog Day Observed Party on Saturday night, but halfway through the conversation I exclaimed, "I've got some with me!" and ran to the bedroom to retrieve the candies from a coat pocket. Then again yesterday morning after brunch in Andersonville, I pulled it out and got all my companions to try some.
So far, the reception has been mildly positive: Yes, that's a pleasant enough taste, but I wouldn't exactly seek it out. As I've mentioned many times before, I'm looking forward to the day when my crop matures and I'll be able to make my own natural woodruff syrup.

But it's a very seasonal thing for me, I buy "Maiblätter" only around May even though there's no real reason for that.
