I didn't even realise it was raining this morning until I was just about to leave the house. It looked a bit windy, but nothing crazy. Even as the shuttle neared the shore and I could see breakers at least a foot high over turbulent brown waters, I only thought Welcome back, winter. But this afternoon my institution cancelled all events along the lakefront, advised us not to go there for any reason, and warned us that the shuttles might have to be rerouted. Crazy!

As I was getting home yesterday, my mother called from Maine because she had seen news reports of the terrible weather in Chicago. Walking 20 feet from the bus to the front door of my building, I assured her that it was just a bit of wind and minor drizzle, no big deal. Then I walked into my unit to hear howling wind and every window vibrating in its frame while the lake shore being pounded by giant waves. Quite a difference a few hundred feet makes.
