muckefuckSummer Milestone of the Day: Eating the first mulberry. Not very flavourful, even though it's from a good tree, so maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit. Also, the catalpas are suddenly blossoming. (That is to say, I stopped paying attention to them for a week and they was all they needed to sneak up on me.) Since that's the conventional milestone for my co-worker from Kansas, here we are.
Too bad it's so reminiscent of last year, with its cold wet June that was hardly distinguishable from a May. I'm worried about the toll it's taking on the ninebark which has recently begun sporting this ugly white patches. They're too glossy to be powdery mildew, but all the same I think they might be the result of too much moisture in the air. On the other hand, it's good for the ferns that the neighbours replanted during their unanticipated gardening surge last weekend.
My woodruff came through that okay and is flourishing. (Just in case, I still I have a pot in reserve for late-season replanting.) Despite their tiny size, the periwinkle plants have finally begun blooming. Garlic chives are on the verge just as the regular chives are fading, and one of the borage plants has a huge cluster of flower buds that looks like some sort of alien maw about to open. Also lingering in bloom are the verbena and the savory. (And the sorrel would be, too, if I didn't keep snapping off its spikes in a vain attempt to keep it from taking over.)
Of course, now our attention is focussed on the mystery plant in our plot. I was ready to rip it up when it first appeared, but then I noticed there was one in the adjoining section and figured it to be a volunteer. We finally quizzed our neighbour about it, though, and he has no idea what it could be either.
