Courtesy of Diego, who met me for pipa duck and spareribs at the new Sun Wah (which already means "New China", so I guess that makes it the new New China). The food was as awesome as always and the space is really impressive. So heartening to see that someone in North Chinatown actually warms to an aesthetic that's not dominated by Viet kitsch. (It's instructive in this regard to compare Sun Wah to Viet Pho, a restaurant a block south on the same side of the street that resembles it only in general size and shape.) Exposed brick, a curved roof, high ceilings--somehow it all seems clean and cozy rather than cavernous and bare.

And it's so wonderful to spend the evening with someone who really knows how to talk. And by that I mean someone who understands the art of conversation, not someone like me who just likes to run off at the mouth. I went there with an idea about what I wanted to babble on about and he deftly steered me to the subjects that I really needed to express without my even knowing. Everyone should have a friend like him.
