Every December, my ambition is to clean off my desk before the new year. Almost inevitably, I fail to accomplish this before January 1st. But rather than giving up, I simply recalibrate to another calendar. I knew I wasn't going to make Julian New Year, so as usual I fell back to Chinese New Year, but it came a little early (26. Jan.) and found my desk still a morass. Fortunately there are always more chances--Tibetan (25. Feb. in 2009), Sikh (14. Mar.), Assyrian (1. Apr.), Thai (13. Apr.), and so forth.

This year, I'm very happy I was able to arrest the slippage before April was upon us and be able to celebrate Nowruz with pride. [livejournal.com profile] monshu and I will be observing it with dinner at Massouleh tonight. (Don't worry, I called and they're open.) And to top it off, I give you ghazal from Kurdish musical legend (and unwitting bear icon) Şivan Perwer:

(Of course it's mournful; these are the Kurds we're dealing with after all.)

It may be chilly outside, but for once it actually feels like spring on the vernal equinox. I saw the brilliant blue skies awaiting me and left my winter coat in the closet. Come evening, I may regret having only a light spring jacket between me and the wind, but that's what hot Persian tea is made to remedy.

ETA: Incidentally, the trail mix I picked up from Pars Grocery last weekend bears a striking resemblance to the هفت ميوه Haft Mēwa described in the Wikipedia article (assuming those skinny green raisiny things are fruits of the oleaster). Perhaps I should make a pilau with the leftovers?
