Snapshots for the album
I've been trying to balance out my rants with more positive posts. To that end, here's some amusing anecdotes from the recent family visit.
- On our last day, we had a substantial conversation with my sister about AWI's learning difficulties and to what extant they mirrored the quirks of other family members. He has a therapeutic diagnosis of Asperger's and an educational one of mild autism. In any case, my sister mentioned that people with Asperger's are often drawn to computers because the blinklenlights have a soothing effect or some such. "Wow, Sis," I responded, "you realise you've just explained the Intarwebs."
- With AWI too self-contained for more than parallel play (
bunj has got a lot of patience sitting there and listening to him narrate his online wargame for a half-hour) and IMI still a largely pre-verbal droolmonster, we ended up interacting mostly with ECI. Our first day, he dragged us outside and had us watch as he tried to run up the slide.
bunj suggested that he needed a running start, which was true; what wasn't quite so true was the suggestion that he needed to start from clear on the other side of the lawn and run full tilt the whole way. But it did make it easier for two aging uncles to keep up with a five year-old dynamo. - Sunday afternoon, I was lying around my sister's house rather listlessly when I got the idea of using YouTube as a jukebox to play some old favourites. When I saw IMI dancing along to "Temptation", it reminded me of the Christmas
bunj got the Bigod 20 cover of "Like a Prayer" and our BIL captured on tape AWI waltzing delightedly alongside the herky-jerky moshing of his uncles. So I played that next and then Thrill Kill Cult's "Cooler Than Jesus". As I always say: Get 'em while they're young!
