My first thought for "he handed it to me" is thug sé dom de lámh é. I don't think toirbhir is incorrect, per se, but it does occupy a higher register than I imagine you want. The only time I've seen toirbhir used is in the name Ord na Toirbhirte, the Presentation Order of nuns. So, when I read your sample sentence I immediately interpreted it as God bestowing something upon you.
