You can take comfort in the fact that they would tell one of my professors in Germany (who was fully fluent in German, English, and Welsh, and possibly other languages as well) the same thing. He went one better, actually: He didn't really know any Dutch vocabulary, so in order to speak it, he had to evolve the forms forwards from his knowledge of Common West Germanic!
