Opening Day 2007

bunj for the pointer, since--as it turns out--monshu does get ESPN2, so I was able to watch the Cards and Mets on glorious low-definition TV rather than the crappy online Gameday summary. As is often the case, the score--Mets 6, Cards 1--doesn't tell the whole story, since there were two points at which the Redbirds almost turned it around. But our offence was no match for their fielding, in particular the incredible team of Valetine and Reyes. It was the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and one out and the fans were on their feet as Rolen stepped up to the plate. Second pitch, grounder right up the middle--and into Valentine's glove. Before you could say "Lord love a duck!" he'd tagged second and then snapped the ball to Reyes in a fantastic double play that decided the match.
As disappointed as I was, I'm still enough of a baseball fan that I'd rather a game keep me on the edge of my seat even if my team loses in the end than watch what's a rout from the word go. But I could've done without the complete bucketheads ESPN hired to call the game. Not only were they not very familiar with the teams, especially the Cardinals, but they made such elementary errors (e.g. misidentifying players) that eventually I had to mute the sound. I hopebunj had more luck with tuning in the radio commentary as substitute audio.
It was a good day. I slept in and, when I awoke, the sun was shining and a stiff breeze was blowing. Then the clouds starting rolling in and I decided I'd better get in my run to Montrose Point and back before it got wet. (IMD, "run" means "brisk walk with spurts of jogging".) After I returned, I dispatched my laundry, and by the time I headed over tomonshu's for a nummy roast pork dinner, it was blustery, overcast, and drizzling: Perfect weather to be inside watching television.
