I've never wielded a Schlaeger myself, but I've read descriptions, and have a good idea of the techniques involved. Like so much sword-fighting, it's devolved into a very stylized art, the main intention of which is to get cool scars on your face (which is why everything else is seriously padded, and the face is the only part either party is attacking). Outside of the Mensur (formal duel), I imagine one could use the Schlaeger like any other broadsword (which essentially it is).
If you do get in a sticky situation in one of your dreams, just let me know. I'll send my dream-self right over. It will be a welcome change from some of my chase dreams (though last night I fought off eight guys before high-tailing it, go me!).
