Kvetching

The brutal incompetence of my surroundings is weighing heavily on me today.

I've wasted at least twenty minutes today trying to explain to a co-worker that she can't always trust the happy little label-printing machine to print out exactly what we want to see, that sometimes she actually has to spare some thought for what's she doing and override it when it produces gibberish.

I took a break from this to bring some books to a colleague and we commiserated about the completely senseless instructions from the selector. I briefly raised the prospect of trying to clarify them, but we both agreed it was far simpler just to carry them out and move on with our lives. He made comparisons to attempting to use the automatic checkout at the grocery store, the one that tells you to place an item on the scale and then turns around and tells you that there's an unexpected item on the scale and you need to remove it.

When I came back, the dim bulb accosted me again and asked if what I wanted her to do was the thing that I had explicitly told her not to do. I took the item out of her hands and railed at our boss for several minutes. She helped calm me down by informing to me that she's only just discovered that our selectors don't know the difference between "classed sep" and "analysed", which is why they kept asking for the former when they actually wanted the latter. (This might sound like an arcane distinction, but it's actually not; I could explain it to you all in like two minutes if I could be sure you'd stay awake that long.)

So I went out to lunch and passed by a half-dozen architects and contractors clustered around the new information desk that is still a sterile hull over a month after it was installed and ten weeks after it was supposed to be ready. Here it is exam week and none of the new workstations have been installed either; if I were a TPU, I'd be pretty pissed about now.

Edit: Oh, and La Vache just came by asking how to turn her computer back on. IT asked us to restart our machines and she was completely ignorant of the existence of the option "Restart" under the "Shutdown" menu. Even when I showed her the power button, she was incapable of turning it back on without turning to another co-worker for help.

Right now, I'm looking for a productive outlet for my frustration and rage so that I don't keep brooding on how much it annoys me that we never fire anyone here.
