How many blondes does it take to pass a motion?

On a discussion board in a galaxy far, far away, I got into some debate about the alleged bias of the BBC. What I see as systematic slanting of reportage on certain issues, others dismiss as minor quibbles. I can see their point; when you disagree with the bases of the "standard narrative" of a historical conflict, any debate on differences within it is going to seem like hairsplitting. The following example isn't major or systematic, but egregious all the same. From an article on the opening of the new European Parliament:

Women MEPs, who represent about a third of the new chamber, threw a spot of colour here and there, particularly the leader of the Green party, Monica Frassoni, whose colourful stripy jacket seemed to match the joy of the day.

That's right, all! The reason we make sure XXs are well-represented in our legislature is their fashion sense.

And woe betide those who don't toe the line. From the Economist's profile of Angela Merkel, when they were speculating on her taking over Germany's Christian Democrats back in 2000: "Her standard outfit is a jacket with baggy trousers or calf-length skirt and flat-heeled, clodhopper shoes. She does not bother to put make-up on her wan face, with its dark-circled eyes and down-turned mouth. She is unabashed by her pudding-basin hairdo and dumpy figure." (A few months later, she'd gotten the message, at least to the extent of changing "the hue of her jackets... from sombre greys and drab browns to flaming reds and bottle green." This was the lead sentence of the profile, mind you.) We will all, of course, remember the Economist's equally extensive commentary on Gerhard Schroeder's figure and Helmut Kohl's couture choices.

This reminds me. I now have fuel the next time someone tells me I'm a USian and not an American. Everything EU is called "European" despite the fact that at least half of Europe by land area is not in the EU. What's good for them is good for us.

Ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, ob ich alles richtig verstehe. Aber es erstaunt doch niemanden wirklich, dass die Kleiderfrage eine Rolle spielt. Es erstaunt mich, dass besonderes Augenmerk auf die Deutschen gelenkt wird. Natürlich hat die Merkel Berater und ist bemüht, alles aus sich herhauszuholen. Ihr Äußeres und ihre Aussagen hatten eben vor einigen Jahren wenig Schnittmengen - das Äußere schien zu sagen, ich bin depressiv, ich mag keine Farben, bei mir ist alles grau in grau - das passt doch nicht zu ihren heutigen Botschaften, jetzt packen wir es an ... Als Ministerin - sie hatte immerhin 2 Ministeraufgaben im Kabinett von Helmut Kohl und war seinerzeit in ihrem Wirken ähnlich farblos wie sie aussah. Sie hat sich schon sehr entwickelt und ist mittlerweile die einflußreichste und mächtigte Politikerin Deutschlands (was ich allerdings bedauerlich finde). Schröder und Kohl sind wieder andere Fälle. Aber Verwandlungen a la Merkel habt ihr Amerikaner und der Rest der Welt doch eindrucksvoll an Hillary Clinton beobachten können. Sie sah schrecklich aus. Ihre Brillen sahen wie Bauklötze aus Glas aus. Heute ist sie strahlend und trägt bombonfarbene Kostümchen. Am Ende waren die Clintons doch das strahlende Paar - fast Hollywood-gerecht. Ich glaube, selbst Bush hat sich beraten lassen in Kleiderfragen.

Aber vieleicht verstehe ich nicht ganz, worum sich Eure Diskussion eigentlich dreht. Es ist jedoch nett, mal mit geschwätz zu haben.
