There are some advantages to being so predictable

monshu turned sleepy puppy around four p.m. He'd been up more than 12 hours at that point. The early morning was devoted to loose ends; a little after nine, we met at Pause and launched the shopping expedition, which resulted in two solid candidates for a bed for me but, alas, no new entrants in the race to replace his againg couch, despite a ride out to the "locationally-challenged" (and "seen-better-days") European Furniture Warehouse on the West Side courtesy of e. and bunj. They dropped us off at La Fonda for an early dinner of lamb chops and duck breast. One of the specials on the dessert menu was chocolate cake. I suggested to monshu that he order it, but he knew he'd be too full after all that lamb, goat cheese, and sweet plantain.

So when he went to the loo, I secretly ordered a piece. The server was a little confused, "You want it to go, but it's for him?" "Es una sorpresa!" When she got back from the kitchen, she winked at me; when monshu stepped out for his smoke, our waitress came over and I snuck the take-out box into a bag of hangers from Bed Bath and Beyond (which, I'm pleased to note, monshu has started calling "Bloodbath" under my influence). It had ice cream on it, so I stuck it in the freezer when we got home. monshu fell asleep around 8:30. I popped on the computer and kept one eye on the clock. At 9:45, I pulled the box out and left it on the table to defrost. At about 10:10, he stumbled out of bed and hit the john. I heard him head into the other room and then nothing much; when I went to check, I saw him taking a dirty fork to the sink. He gave me a big ice-cream-crummy kiss and asked, "How did you know?"
