Romantic midnight

muckefuckI desperately want to go take a nap right now, but I don't want to be known to my colleagues as the kind of guy who takes naps in public places like some sort of bum. If only I could break into someone's car...
I can't explain why I didn't sleep better last night. At least I was rewarded with cool dreams. One was set in Your Older Brother's D&D Campaign (e.g. my boon companion was named "Hendry Marsack"--HUZZAH!) and featured a literal flight-to-the-hills as some local conflict spun out of hand. Among the stragglers who put off fleeing were two male friends and a lone female who through their lot in together as they made for the pass. At one point, one of the men was horsing around with the woman. He was lying prone on the ground with her lying prone on him and wriggling; both were giggling. Suddenly, he turned over on his back, causing them to come face-to-face. For a moment, you saw the scene in her mind's eye: Her eyes half-closed, her lips pursed for a kiss--but it wasn't him she was about to kiss, it was his best friend. He said something softly to her, but it was enough to break the spell; the image flashed back to reality. Panicked, she attempted to pull back, but he misinterpreted this as an attack of shyness and tried to pull her close to him with one arm. She pulled away again and, all at once, it was clear to him what had happened. The sadness in his face at that moment, when he realised that the affection momentarily directed at him was meant for another, it stuck with me. No matter how many times I woke up during the night, the scene sprang back to my mind.
