Schneeweiss
Another full day at the hospital. Well, I did get to sleep in some. Too much, as it turned out, because it left the GWO rushing to get to an appointment for a doctor who always makes us wait for an hour-and-a-half before seeing us anyway. At least that was his track record before today, where he only kept us waiting an hour. In the meantime, he sent in his resident who had the curious given name of "Reuel". As he was preparing to leave, I asked him if his parents were Tolkien fans and he confessed that his brother's name was "Ronald" before rhaspodising about rewatching both Hobbit films over break, seeing the new one, then rewatching LotR. SO. CUTE.
The best thing about sitting around oncology waiting to see if octreotide makes
monshu feel icky was the view of the lakefront park buried in snow. Sure as hell wasn't the food. Since it was lunchtime, they offered the Old Man a burger and fries, but the fries were cold and the burger tasted like it was made from Play-Do. At least we were able to abscond to the surprisingly good coffee shop down the street where I could wash it down with hot chocolate. There was a beardy hipster bear at the next table poring through a book with onionskin pages and I was like "Ooh, literary anthology!" But then it occurred to me there's a more common text with pages like that and we I stole a closer peek, I saw a book on New Testament exegesis. Oh, well.
We wrapped up the day at urology, which was actually...fun? The nurse/receptionist was an absolute stitch the fresh-faced young resident was all smiles and surprisingly good questions. When he came to see us, the physician brought a sketch he'd drawn for him and explained how exactly it is that sticking a big tube into your body causes it to freak out a bit. So it looks like the hematuria is just something the Old Man will have to learn to live with for now.
