If you ever need proof of the dictum, "Every story has a happy ending; it's all a matter of where you end the story", just watch Boogie Nights. It ends with our sweet multiracial nontraditional pornstar family all reunited under one roof, making movies together again the old-fashioned way...in 1982. I found myself unable to avoid supplying the silent postscript, "Then they all came down with AIDS and died."

In the back of my head, this was another of those talked-about films made "a while back" that I hadn't gotten around to seeing. I was amazed to discover it was made in 1997. That's seventeen years ago. At least that explains why John C. Reilly looks so young. Alfred Molina I didn't recognise at all. This was Burt Reynolds' big comeback film, wasn't it? He looks as hot as has ever has in it, which makes me wish they'd given him a few sex scenes. And I'd completely forgotten this was Wahlberg's big breakout. Like Will Smith, he's been an actor so long now that I have to be reminded it's his second career.

They and the rest of the ensemble cast all turn in top-notch performances, the sets and costumes are gloriously awful, and the music is pitch-perfect. Still, I was left singing, "Is that all there is?" Some of the scenes (like the donut shop) were soap operatic in the way they hammered at my suspension of disbelief. And I felt like I never got any insight into why Macy's character did what he did or how Eddie's mother ended up such a bitter and cruel woman.
