There came a point when I wondered if, by building a little palisade of sticks around my newly-planted mayapple, I was making it more of a target rather than less. The GWO was more philosophical: "If the kids who walk by here decide to pull it up, then there's not much you can do." Sadly, he's right. It's tucked back enough from the walk that I'm counting on their laziness. (The planters outside the north entrance could hardly have been more accessible.) It's also right next to the Kulturbeet which, as far as we can tell, no one has disturbed, so it's got that in its favour.

I wouldn't care so much if it hadn't been so criminally overpriced. The forest preserves are carpeted with them this time of year and Gethsemane has the gall to charge $6? Well, they're only charging what the market will bear and that market is small and composed of money fools with romantic notions about native plants--like me. They make me homesick for the woods. And there a plant I haven't seen people using around here. Perhaps that means they're difficult to grow, but I'm hoping it's something not on their radar because growers aren't pushing it.

After all, as I was complaining to Dad, everyone in town (including my employer) seems to have the exact same viburnum. Don't get me wrong, V. × juddii is a lovely plant and all, but there are on the order of 150 species, surely one or two of the others would make a nice planting, too. If the woodruff takes (and there's a clump which has survived a summer drought and the harshest winter in ages), it will be rather distinctive. As would a flowering dogwood, if Dad can ever remember to bring me one which won't die. (He says he'll look again before he comes up in two weeks.)

I also did a little fiddling in the garden plot, moving the catnip to a different pot and displacing the lemon balm back towards the wall. We still need to move the lovage before it becomes monstrous again, but I was hoping to consult with the neighbours first. They've been around, but whatever plans they have we aren't privy to them. It was so balmy today (a frankly ridiculous 32°C) that [livejournal.com profile] monshu cracked most of the windows and set half the plants outside. Maybe the cool nights and warm wet days will prod another blooming out of the azaleas? The geraniums are crazy with blooms, but I want it be a little more consistently warm before I put those back in their planters.
