Unreliable witness
Saw a traffic accident today. Well, I should say I saw the results of a traffic accident. When it actually happened, I was staring at chicory blossoms in a vacant lot. ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
monshu and I had just crossed the street to the bus stop for the westbound Lawrence. We heard a shriek of brakes and turned around to see an elderly Asian woman lying in the road next to the front passenger-side fender of a compact car. The driver-side door swung open and a visibly distressed young White man leapt out, leaving it ajar, and went to her aid. As he was helping her to a standing position, the bus arrived. It had to cross into the other lane to swerve around the stopped car. We promptly filed in. A woman sitting by the rear window of the bus was recounting the scene over her phone to someone I presume was a 911 operator. She said that the woman was barefoot, and that she saw the driver pack her into his car and drive off. We conjectured that he was pulling the typical desperate Chicago manœuvre of making a quick left turn as the light was yellow and struck her. It was a grey drizzly day and visibility was poor. A crowd of us had crossed the street together; the woman may have fallen behind the rest, causing the driver to overlook her. She didn't look seriously injured, but it was hard to tell from that remove.
