I did switch to Spanish earlier when the counterman didn't understand my question about "hot beverages". Although he understood me readily, he only responded in English. A few moments later, a dark-haired, dark-eyed, swarthy customer came in and was immediately addressed in Spanish--which he apparently didn't understand. The counterman seemed to forget this a few minutes later, and tried speaking Spanish to him again. I call this the "Güero Effect". How can a blue-eyed fair-haired dude like me possibly speak decent Spanish?
